Blood cancer, also called hematological cancer, occurs when abnormal cells in the blood grow out of control. Hematological malignancies are primary cancers of the blood and blood-forming organs (bone marrow and lymphoid tissues), which includes leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma.

Cytogenetics has become an essential part of diagnosis and management of the haematological malignancies. The presence of specific chromosomal and genetic alterations exclusively observed in malignant cells helps in diagnosis, risk stratification, treatment response and prognostic assessment.
